 Political correctness

Is actually about equal respect for everyone regardless of any factor.

The phrase PC brigade gets thrown about- usually by folk who don't get this basic premise about respect.

Discuss.

What's the point of respect if it is automatically given to everyone. Kinda devalues it's currency.

You have to gain respect.

What's the use in respect if you just give it to everyone equally and automatically? When you do that respect becomes worthless. Respect should only be given to those who have earned it.
Now perhaps what you refer to as respect your opening post could be better described as politeness and decency of a sorts.

Who decides what is politically correct and why do so many people follow it like sheep?

There's certain terms that shouldn't be used but the one I cannot get my head around is this whole "title" business. People wanting to be referred to as Mx rather an Ms, Miss, Mr, Mrs. Here's an idea - how about we just don't bother with this outdated concept than create a new one.

What is your definition of respect?
By all do you mean out and open racists and, say, members of the KKK?

Respect is acknowledging that prejudice exists and that you have no truck with it.

Of course there are individuals and groups that are abhorrent by their actions not by who they are as people.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

Look at this way. If I were to force you to say you respect someone would you saying you respect that person truly have any value?

The problem for the Social Justice Warriors of the snowflake generation is that they have been left with the dregs after their parents and grandparents ushered in our tolerant society and we undoubtedly are one of the most open and welcoming peoples on earth.

I would recommend to anyone the Trevor Phillips documentary "has political correctness gone mad?"

Trev had a discussion with Student union leaders including one from Edinburgh. among things they had already decided to ban were wearing sombreros. I wonder if any Mexican universities have banned the wearing of tartan? I don't know how Trevor managed to keep a straight face.

I see John Lewis announced it has removed all Boys and Girls labels from their clothing range today, another business marked off the Lochnagar household list!

An MP recently liking and retweeting “Those abused girls in Rotherham and elsewhere just need to shut their mouths. For the good of diversity.”

Perhaps while the SJW's are looking for racism under every rock and searching for statues to be offended by the rest of us will have time to get on with our lives discriminating only by the content of ones character.

Yeah we "don't get it" jesh..

Really?

Thanks for your advice towk, I reject that assertion and would advise you not to force your own opinions of what is "too many" on others.

I'll watch what I want thanks and how much of it, and it would rarely be youtube or indeed anything from the US.

I automatically treat everyone with respect until they prove they aren't worthy of it. I guess it's just the way I was brought up.

Do you mean you are polite to people and have good manners? I don't necessarily think that is the same as having respect for someone. Unless you can tell me other ways in which you show respect for people you don't know.

I think people are mixing up treating someone with respect, and having respect for them.

I like to think that I treat everyone with respect (even swivel-eyed right-wing loons), but having respect for someone requires some positive action on their part (as TOWK says).
