 Washing Machine repairs
Topic Originator: FergPar

Our washing machine stopped working last night.

It still fills with water but the drum isn't turning. I took the back and top panels off the machine to see if this was being caused by the belt, however it is still on and in good condition.

Anyone think what this may be?

And, can anyone recommend someone to come out and have a look?

Thanks

Gus McPherson

It sounds like the brushes mate. You can buy them and fit them for next to nothing. They're wee carbon rectangular shaped things. They basically make the drum spin. You'll end up paying over the odds to get it repaired or a new one.

As GZ said.
It's not a difficult job in any way. You'll even find a tutorial on YouTube for your brand of machine.
You will pay a fortune if you bring a pro in to do this simple job.

Check to make sure there's nothing jammed between the drum and the outer casing. Try and move the drum by hand and if it's not moving freely there may be something in there. It's happened to mine a few times.

Make sure it's not something stuck in the waste outlet,, there is a drain at the bottom rhs of machine under thin panel, that's what was wrong with ours, 3 Kirby grips and 2 5p coins retrieved, works perfectly again.

The wee shop across from Montys up the town sells them. I'm pretty sure that's where I went for them. Again, YouTube is God in these cases.

Was close to buying a new £360 machine on Thursday to replace a 10 year old Indesit that had stopped spinning half way through a cycle when I stumbled upon this thread.

Ordered new brushes for a tenner. Fitted them today and the machine got as far again then stopped. Realised it wasn't draining so it couldnt spin. Googled this problem and was told to clean the filter. Found a few coins and a small bit of leather that were stopping it from draining. Sorted and 350 odd quid saved. Happy days!
