 Time for another beer thread

As many of you know, I'm not the type of girl who would poison the sacred temple of my body with alcoholic beverages...

However, being forced to endure the shimmering heat of Spain right now, I've taken it upon myself to sample some of the refreshing beverages of the Iberian Peninsula, much as it pains me to do so...

Most Spanish beer is lager, and is actually alright when compared to the shytey p!shwater of the USA such as Coors Light or Budweiser...

Estrella is ok and there are a few others which are quite palatable to drink while being tortured mercilessly by the Mediterranean sun..

I normally drink dark beer, and would cut my left testicle off right now for a cold can of McEwan's Export, but the choices here are limited...

There's one called Voll Damm which is actually quite tasty but extremely strong and akin to Jakie Juice like Super Lager or Special Brew... I had a few the other night and swiftly lapsed into Cheyne-Stokes breathing before lurching into a corner to die...

Anyhoo, what's yer favourite tipple right now...?

AWB

In my last few trips away I have found Dorada do a great range of Special Edition dark bottled beers.

I found one very good very similar to Bellhaven best with the flavour but not as heavy.

Thanks man, I'll keep my eye out for that... just getting a bit sick of lager you know? There's an English shop near me that sells mostly English ales and bitters and such like but it's priced out the roof...time for a little more investigation methinks.. cheers

When in Spain I usually quite enjoy Mahou. In the Canaries they sell one called Tropico which is very nice.
I'm sympathetic to you plight. It must be hell to only have some ice cold generic brand of beer to sip on during those warm Spanish nights in the garden. Stay strong AWP. ;-)
Oh look it's started raining again here in Fife.

Hiya Jimmy....

Cruzcampo, the king of beers. Im stunned that lagers like San Miguel, Estrella and even Mahou are pretty big in the UK and yet Cruzcampo is still generally ignored. Its criminal- my favourite tipple, costs me a fortune in some of the more specialist shops where it is available

When I lived in Spain, I used to import British beers and ciders and distribute to pubs and supermarkets between Valencia and Mazarron. Low duty and a favourable exchange rate meant I could sell for less than a U.K. Supermarket even after transport costs. Where there are high numbers of ex-pats, there is definitely a market.

As said above, some big brands are to be found in some supermarkets, as some Spanish national distributors are doing Greene King, London Pride and Shepherd Neame in some areas.

I've got a crate of Veltins beer at the moment. Good German beer even if they sponsor the hated rivals of BVB

"Cruzcampo, the king of beers. Im stunned that lagers like San Miguel, Estrella and even Mahou are pretty big in the UK and yet Cruzcampo is still generally ignored."

The biggest selling lager in Spain apparently, owned by Heineken (who don't the own ?) - perhaps that's why they won't market it here in competition to other stable mate brands ?

Incidentally, the original San Miguel comes from the Philippinnes, no ties with the Spanish brand nowadays.

Cruzcampo. We had that at our all inclusive hotel. Thought it was a bit cheap and cheerful. Only good because it was cold.

I am currently staring at a bottle of Singha beer, a decent and quite flavoursome lager all the way from Singapore.

Singha... I lived on that stuff in Thailand... I switched from Chang since it was making me feel ill...I've since discovered that Chang beer contains formaldehyde... don't know if that's just an urban myth but it made me genuinely ill... Singha, on the other hand, made me feel refreshed and happy (sorry, I'm trying to keep a straight face), but Chang is genuinely the Devil's brew... mon the Singha...

Singha also contained formaldehyde but it had to be removed for sale in EU

I don't think it has it now certainly not in EU. Was used as a preservative.

Most of my trips abroad are to the land of my birth and the only Italian beer worth drinking is Moretti. Peroni must be the most overrated ever, imo. There's more flavour in lukewarm tap water.

Some very nice Czech beers when I visited Prague some years ago now, can't remember their names, unfortunately.

Pilsner Urquell is the original blond lager, and Budweiser also originated from Czech Republic.

They, and the other outfit from St.Louis, have been in dispute over the trademark for over 100 years.

Ozpar - Singha?
Why not a Mornington Peninsula Brown Ale? I love it.

I did drink a lot of Tsingtao in Shanghai a few years ago, until there was a newspaper article explaining that testing had confirmed that the level of formaldehyde was at an "acceptable level". Apparently the addition is allowed there.

Best lager I've ever had is Forst (Austrian I believe). At home I tend to drink San Miguel or Ghost Ship (Adnams).

I only seem to drink on match days nowadays and the beer in the clubhouse of the team I follow is typical cr#p keg so have turned to bottles. I have become quite partial to shepherd neame Whitechapel porter I also don't mind a bottle or two of Robinson Trooper

Here's a pub quiz trivia question for the beer aficionados.

Which unit of the SI system is named after an English brewer ?

Refreshed my kegs (40 pints each) for the kegerator last night in anticipation of a couple of parties at our house this weekend. Got an Archer Duet IPA (brewed by Green Flash Brewery) and a Blah Blah Blah IPA from 21st Amendment in San Francisco (http://21st-amendment.com/beers/blah-blah-blah/). It's a bit of a p*** take on the number of variety of IPAs there are here, on the canned version among the spoof IPAs listed is 'Haggis IPA'.

Beer on tap at home is a bit too tempting especially in the warm evenings.

Not that this helpful to anyone outside California of course...

<<Ozpar - Singha? Why not a Mornington Peninsula Brown Ale? I love it.>>

Sadly, I am not a brown ale fan, GG741. Talking of Mornington Peninsula beers, there's a new beer and cider brewery opening here at St Andrews Beach in October on the site of the old Markdel horse racing training stables, which has got this old Par ever so slightly excited.

GG, I'm not long back from a trip to your homeland and I was stunned at the amount of places that stocked Tennents Super. There was hardly a beer fridge in a shop that didn't have it. I checked a bottle to see if it was the same stuff and it was the original jaikie juice from back home. I also noticed that most of the draught lager that was sold in restaurants and pubs was German.

Haha. That caught me out one night in Rome allparone. Went out for a nice meal with the soon to be Mrs Ipswich. Went to see the Forum at night then popped into a wee bar. Thought, that's nice some Scottish draught lager, I'll have some of that not realising it was Super.

Absolutely minging stuff. First and last time I've had it.

Well done Ipswich - correct.

Joules of Stone was a well known name in English brewing, taken over by Bass Charrington in 1968 and closed down - but the name has since been revived and you can buy a pint in the brewpub.

Steinhauser- cheap from Aldi is a cracking light german lager, not the bloated feeling you get from most UK lagers.

Still trying to get an Astra supplier in the UK. 1Euro a bottle in Hamburg and its amazing.
