There's more than a few, the older I get. But one that digs right at the heartstrings is Harry Chapin's "Cats in the Cradle". I doubt there is a father or a son, or a grandfather or grandson for that matter, who can't associate in some way with the words of this song. Do you have a song that gets you in this way?

Edit: For some reason, the youtube link doesn't seem to go to hyperlink.

Not sure why. But have found a link that works

Seasons in the Sun by Terry...cant remember his second name. Cannae be bothered to google it. Anyway a sad song about a man facing a premature end to his life yet at the same time it's kinda life affirming.

Hiya Jimmy....

Superb idea for a thread Oz, kudos..

Christ, where to begin...?

Still in love with you - Thin Lizzy
Don't believe a word - Thin Lizzy

I think part of this has to do with how much I miss Phil, and my thoughts about the fabulous music and poetry we were denied when he left us..

Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty

As above, but enhanced by my personal habit of never settling down..

Holiday - Scorpions

One from the vault..

I Left My Heart In San Francisco - Mr. Tony Bennett

My Gran's favourite singer...I saw him do it live at Caesars Palace in Vegas and he had me greeting like a wee lassie, overwhelmed with the memories and nostalgia...

I've Been Loving You So Long - Otis Redding

Quite simply the greatest soul singer of all time, and another one taken too soon...I could greet just looking at old phoaties of the man..

OK, enough...I'm away for a guid blubble...

No sure if it brings a tear to my eye but seeing you mention Otis Reading AWP reminds me that he died only a few days after recording Sitting By the Dock of the Bay. I always think about that when listening to that song.

"Dance with my father again " by Luther Vandross, similar sentiments to "In the living years" mentioned above.

TOWK - it was Terry Jacks with Seasons in the Sun, 73/74 or thereabouts.

Good thread topic, Oz.

Streets of London by Ralph McTell is one that springs to mind. It's about homeless people in the capital. Very poignant.

Imagine by John Lennon. So wistful.

Right down the line/Waiting for the day, by the great Gerry Rafferty or Songbird by Fleetwood Mac.

Pity Christine murdered the song on telly /radio recently.

This band made some achingly sad songs.

This singer was coping with his sisters suicide and his mothers death from cancer. He wrote these songs as a way of coping - they always get to me.

First time whenever I saw your face.

This of course is about love, not death but it was a really heartfelt , honest lyric and so this is my pick of the tear jerkers

As a sad song then the theme for Watership Down caused more than one sudden onset of hayfever when I was growing up.

A more recent one which affects me but from a happy optimistic perspective is First Aid Kit's "My Silver lining".

Or Rammstein's Seemann.

Oh...and quite a lot of Einaudi's stuff.

Songs that bring a tear tae my eye ?
Comfortably numb by the Scissor Sisters ๐Ÿ˜
An abomination of a cover.
(Yeah I know that's not what was meant by the OP ... but I really feel so strongly about this issue that it makes me greet every time I hear it)

Right now - pretty much any Linkin Park song, although In the End currently 'wins'.

A few others;

Cats in the Cradle (Harry Chapin version), as mentioned in the OP.
Hurt - Johnny Cash (although you really need to watch the video for full effect)
Angel - Sarah McLachlan

Maps is an absolute masterpiece.

Monument by Royksopp doesn't quite reduce me to tears but pulls away at several emotions.

Although every biography you find will list Lord Byron as "English" his ancestry was Scottish and although born in London he was raised and schooled in Aberdeenshire until the age of 10.

This "quintessential Englishman" wrote one of the most patriotic Scottish songs of all time.

"Dark Lochnagar"
